The recognition was given to the ‘Bagda Shrimp of Bangladesh’ in the Geographical Indication Registration Certificate recently signed by the Registrar of the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks of the Ministry of Industries, Janendra Nath Sarkar.
According to the document, it is being certified that in the geographical indication registration book, in the name of the Department of Fisheries, in the 29th and 31st class, GI-11 number has been registered for the shrimp product of Bangladesh from 04.08.2019.
It is learned that in May 2019, Bangladesh applied for GI certificate for shrimp.
On October 8 last year, the Department of Design and Trademarks published the matter in the Gazette and in an international journal.
As a rule, if no one objects within two months of its publication in the journal, there is no further impediment to obtaining the GI certificate of that product.
Bangladesh became the first applicant to get GI certificate as no other country objected to it during this period.
