Rimon Mehboob Rohit, Cox’s Bazar: In Cox’s Bazar, trees and houses have been destroyed in the Kalbaishakhi storm. After 10 am on Saturday (May 21), sudden Kalbaishakhi storm started in different areas of Chakaria, Maheshkhali, Kutubdia, Ukhia-Teknaf and Sadar of the district. One person died after being crushed by a tree. Besides, a tourist was injured at Cox’s Bazar beach and seven school children were injured at Maheshkhali.

The deceased has been identified as Abdu Shukkur, 40. The incident took place in Shantinagar area of Harbang union of Chakaria upazila. Harbang Union Parishad Chairman Mehraj Uddin Miraj confirmed the news.

Meanwhile, a tourist named Mostafizur Rahman (32) was seriously injured when a kitkat umbrella flew in the strong winds of Kalbaishakhi at Sugandha Point on Cox’s Bazar beach around 10:15 am. He was later taken to Dhaka after initial treatment. The injured tourist is a resident of Tongi College Gate area of Dhaka.

In Maheshkhali, at least six students were injured when a semi-finished school house of an educational institution called East Haryana Private Primary School collapsed in the Kalbaishakhi storm.

The injured Muntahar (8), a pre-primary class student, was taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment as his condition was critical. She is the daughter of Alam Saudagar, a local Hariya Chhara.

Cox’s Bazar Additional Deputy Commissioner (Overall) Zahid Iqbal said various houses and plants in the district had collapsed. He said work was underway to determine the extent of the damage.
