Request for recruitment of new Bangladeshi workers in Maldives-DailyProbash.com

The Maldives has been asked to recruit new staff from Bangladesh and expedite the legalization of undocumented (unregistered) Bangladeshi workers.

Bangladesh High Commissioner Rear Admiral SM Abul Kalam Azad made the request at a meeting of the country’s Economic Development Minister Ismail Fayaz on Thursday (May 19th).

At present, the number of Bangladeshi expatriates in the Maldives is about 1 lakh. Of these, about 50,000 workers are staying illegally and working irregularly.

On the other hand, the Maldivian government has stopped hiring new expatriate workers from Bangladesh since September 2019. On the other hand, workers from other countries are constantly coming to Maldives.

The Minister was requested to raise the issues and provide necessary assistance. The Minister emphasized on the legalization of the staff of unregistered Bangladeshi nationals and assured assistance in recruiting new staff.

The meeting also discussed ways to enhance trade relations between the two countries.

Deputy Ministers for Economic Development Riaz Mansoor and Maryam Nazima and First Secretary of Bangladesh Mission Mohammad Sohail Parvez were present at the meeting.
